Are you a fan of fatty foods, junk foods and pretty much most foods with no nutritional value? Well of course you are, who isn't?
Does your family have a history of stroke or heart disease?
If so than you may want to slow it down, because there's a good chance that you may be at risk and not even know it. Each year nearly 700,000 people are afflicted with some type of stroke. Of that number, 100,000 are African American. What's even more alarming though is that African Americans are twice as likely as other ethnic groups to have a stroke and that one half of all African American women will die from a stroke or heart disease.
Earlier this month, Grammy Award winner, Bebe Winans and "Hip Hop Doc" Dr. Rani Whitfield teamed up and have been actively campaigning for stroke awareness through the American Stroke Association's, Power to End Stroke Campaign
Dr. Whitfield adds:
Hypertension is the number one risk factor for heart disease and stroke and African Americans are affected by this disorder more than any other ethnic group in the country. And so if we can control the blood pressure, we can definitely reduce the incidents of stroke and heart disease. But there's also diabetes, high cholesterol, there's sedentary lifestyles, people are just not exorcising and with that comes obesity.
There is a long tradition in the African American community of cooking up soul food. But unfortunately, often times we fail to take in account that, that same plate with the cornbread, collard greens, mash potatoes and deep fried fill-in-the blank is loaded with fat and cholesterol.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, 31.1 percent of African-Americans were obese in 2001, up from 19.3 percent ten years prior. That means obesity has shot up over 50% in a decade and the numbers have risen even more today.
What's more is that according to the CDC nearly 50 percent of African American women are obese.
Bebe was close friends to Luther Vandross, who had diabetes and died of a stroke in 2005. He also lost his brother to heart disease, which prompted him and his family all seek out the doctor about their own susceptibility to getting a stroke.
My brother had heart disease, so our lives were touched by that. Understanding what happened in his life and losing him definitely propelled all my family to go and visit the doctor to find out about the high blood pressure which runs in our family. We are all aware of what's happening in our family so we found it necessary to teach others, adds Bebe.
So what can be done? Dr. Whitfield and Bebe provide some solutions here:
•Eat a balanced diet emphasizing a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat or nonfat dairy products, fish, legumes and sources of protein low in saturated fat.
•Get physically active at least 30 minutes per day, most days of the week.
•Don't smoke-if you smoke, stop.
•Schedule regular visits with your doctor.
And remember, don't wait until its too late when you have the power to prevent it today. For more information, call the American Stroke Association at (888) 4-STROKE or visit www.strokeassociation.org/power.

From Blacks4Barack...ACTION TIME !!!!!!!!!
Demand To DNC: Kick Hillary Out NOW !
Insinuates That Obama Could Be ASSASSINATED !
Now, things have gone way too far. Today, in an appearance in South Dakota, Hillary Clinton justified her reason for staying in the campaign by referring to the fact that presidential hopeful 'Robert Kennedy was assasinated in June'...implying that the same could occur to Senator Obama. THIS IS SICK !!! Regardless of how the pundits try to spin this as just another misspeak, the statement speaks for itself and displays the diobolical mentality of Hillary Clinton.
It is unclear as to whether she is actually hoping that Obama would be killed, therefore giving her an open path to the Democratic nomination, or if she may be signaling her desire to some sick, warp minded homicidal maniac. Whichever be the case, her statement is automatic grounds for the Democratic National Committee headed by Howard Dean to demand that she remove herself from the race. If he does not, American Democrats should demand HIS stepping down !
This can not be tolerated!!! Regardless of who you are a supporter of, Hillary, Obama or McCain, ANYONE who would wish the death of another human being in order to win a political position is sick, dangerous, maniacal, deranged and totally mentally and morally unfit for any political position, particularly President or V.P. of the United States.

My brother suffered a stroke at 34 and it has completely altered his life. He has no movement in his right arm and leg. Here he was in the prime of his life and now he's like a teenager living at home with our elderly mother who is now his 24hr home attendant. And what's sad is the doctors put him on medication to control his high blood pressure but he refused to take the medication. Now he suffers daily in pain, as he is trapped inside his own body and he's only 35.

black folks need to wake yup about what they put in their mouth. discounting the fat content of our food we should realize that the chemicals that are placed in those foods are a contributing factor to the high incidence of cancer in our bodies.
All things said, yes, we nee4d to be more attentive to what we eat.

This can happen to any of us, a stroke a heart attack, death. God has given us life and death we must choose, he even says to choose life in case you did not have a clue. Soul food is good and good for you, but what is in there such as : butter, pork which really cause your BP to rise, fried foods. Every thing is good in moderation.
My mom went to the hospital memorial weekend with chest pains, heaviness in chest, shortness of breath, why because the day before had sausage(in fried drippings), pork ribs(in grease, fat, water), greens(in oil drippings), mash potatoes(in milk and butter), yams(in butter)and then told my brother while she is in hospital he is not the cause and do not allow yourself to feel that why....this is from all my years of eating this.
My mother is 76 refuse to take BP medicine because she is a retired RN which are the next worse patients next to doctors. She went home this time two medicines plus aspirin, vow to take unless side afects. My Father died of congestive heart failure, I am on BP medicine with beta blcker at 42 I know my risk factor and adherring to medicine, diet and physical activity.
The food is not killing us but allowing us not to be as productive and live as longer. The bible talks about three score and ten which is seventy years, I want to live longer than that and want my mom and others but we decide we have a will and my mom must choose hers as well.
My mom always carried a high BP 2 something over 1 something when normal is 120/60 now 140/90 these days . She wonders why she's dizzy when it goes down because its been up there for so long but the side affects do wear off. Stay with regimen and see your doctor. Cut back, beef up on the physical activity, drink plenty of water as well as living water to keep kidneys functioning and eternal life. And BE BLESSED.

I know this is the truth.I am a minister and I teach that, there is know such thing as, something being pass down from one family member too another. What gets passed down are habits. The son should not suffer the sins of the father but,we as a people,go full circle. we learned nothing. We eat as our fathers ate,we think as our farhers Thougnt,we live as our father lived. So we have the same problems that our fathers had.I have had heart desease in my family, high blood presure, stroke in my family but,I don't have that problem.I guess because,I changed those habits in my live.I stop eatting pork,I stop drinking sodas, and I don't drink.I'm not perfect at all but, even the little changes in our lives can make greater changes in the way we live.So change the way you think. And may God bless you.

Pharoahxyz, I hope that your response to the article pertaining to strokes was meant to be facetious. While I would agree that soul food can be delicious and extremely healthy, you must know that when soul food is made using traditonal methods, that it can be very unhealthy. We must eliminate fried foods, as well as saturated fats such as pigs feet, ham hocks, fat back and the likes from our diets. It's just a fact that saturated fats will kill you. There are numerous ways to enjoy the healthy aspects of soul food, without all of the deadly fat that is usually associated with many of these foods. Ask anyone who has had a stroke of a heart attack. I bet that they would give anything to go back and change their former eating habits. If you believe that solidarity is created through soul food, then lets have our soul food and maintain health at the same time.

I,too, have suffered the loss of family members to strokes and heart attacks. I am of African American & West Indian heritage so the way our foods are cooked and what I've grown up with has a double effect. At age 45 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and it was discovered that I have chronic HP. Apparently, I've had HP for a number of years and didn't know it. I think the problem with "our" people is that we are reluctant to change, even in the face of comprimising our own health. Somehow there's a disconnect. I don't know the solution to this dilemma but until we can change our "thinking", we cannot change our behavior.
