Are you a fan of fatty foods, junk foods and pretty much most foods with no nutritional value? Well of course you are, who isn't?
Does your family have a history of stroke or heart disease?
If so than you may want to slow it down, because there's a good chance that you may be at risk and not even know it. Each year nearly 700,000 people are afflicted with some type of stroke. Of that number, 100,000 are African American. What's even more alarming though is that African Americans are twice as likely as other ethnic groups to have a stroke and that one half of all African American women will die from a stroke or heart disease.
Earlier this month, Grammy Award winner, Bebe Winans and "Hip Hop Doc" Dr. Rani Whitfield teamed up and have been actively campaigning for stroke awareness through the American Stroke Association's, Power to End Stroke Campaign
Dr. Whitfield adds:
Hypertension is the number one risk factor for heart disease and stroke and African Americans are affected by this disorder more than any other ethnic group in the country. And so if we can control the blood pressure, we can definitely reduce the incidents of stroke and heart disease. But there's also diabetes, high cholesterol, there's sedentary lifestyles, people are just not exorcising and with that comes obesity.
There is a long tradition in the African American community of cooking up soul food. But unfortunately, often times we fail to take in account that, that same plate with the cornbread, collard greens, mash potatoes and deep fried fill-in-the blank is loaded with fat and cholesterol.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, 31.1 percent of African-Americans were obese in 2001, up from 19.3 percent ten years prior. That means obesity has shot up over 50% in a decade and the numbers have risen even more today.
What's more is that according to the CDC nearly 50 percent of African American women are obese.
Bebe was close friends to Luther Vandross, who had diabetes and died of a stroke in 2005. He also lost his brother to heart disease, which prompted him and his family all seek out the doctor about their own susceptibility to getting a stroke.
My brother had heart disease, so our lives were touched by that. Understanding what happened in his life and losing him definitely propelled all my family to go and visit the doctor to find out about the high blood pressure which runs in our family. We are all aware of what's happening in our family so we found it necessary to teach others, adds Bebe.
So what can be done? Dr. Whitfield and Bebe provide some solutions here:
•Eat a balanced diet emphasizing a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat or nonfat dairy products, fish, legumes and sources of protein low in saturated fat.
•Get physically active at least 30 minutes per day, most days of the week.
•Don't smoke-if you smoke, stop.
•Schedule regular visits with your doctor.
And remember, don't wait until its too late when you have the power to prevent it today. For more information, call the American Stroke Association at (888) 4-STROKE or visit www.strokeassociation.org/power.

This is a very serious subject. I hope Desmond will reconsider his philosophy. Not all obese & fat people are poor but poor diet is usually the cheap one. By that I mean, I see a lot of my people lined up at the fast food restaurants for dinner. Since gas has gotten so high, I am riding the public transportation real often & I see & smell their fried chicken & fish they are taking home for dinner. It is very important to eat 5 servings of vegetables everyday & 5 servings of fruits everyday. Vegetables will strengthen your body & fruits will cleanse your body. We must try to eat the vegetables raw because boiling them a long time will take away most of the minerals & vitamins with the exception of tomatoes. The helpful substance in tomatoes are released with cooking. You can be strong to fight the injustice Black people continue to receive when you eat healthy.
So please switch to whole grain wheat bread, brown rice, low fat, low sodium & low sugar. Take time to prepare your own food because processed foods have too much sodium, sugar & fat in them. These 3 items are making our people sick. Please change your water & sugar drinks (pop) to juice or water. Diabetes is striking our very young & chips, donuts & pop could be
the reason. Some people didn't realize that starches(carbohydrate) convert to sugar. So think about this menu & you will see its not balanced potatoe salad,
macroni & cheese, rice, steak & gravy. Although the word salad is behind potatoe. There is mostly potatoes in this salad. Potatoes convert to sugar.
Go to every free Health Fair you see advertise & know your bmi, body mass index, your chlosterol, hdl, ldl, trigyclerine)blood pressure, glucose, hiv, & your teeth condition.
Let's stay healthy.
Peace

Yes, I have known a lot of people that have had strokes from whites to blacks to hispanic's and asians. I also know they all eat fried something from crikets to chicken, so stop attacking only blacks, that is very bias and stereotypical of you people.

Know This; #2 PharoXYZ, #8 Susan and #13 most likely are 'white'persons. They took the time and space to "poke" fun at the Africain-Americans BP problem. As a race we are the 'Kings and Queens' of "FADS". We CHANGE everything, but our eating, smoking, drinking and 'Party' habits! We're our worse ENEMY! God please help us to understand more than the "FADS". What will the next 20 years look like for our Race.

I was dignosed with pulmonary hypertension two years ago. I thought I was normal healthy person until the warning signs started to come gradually.I take two heart medications ; which is very expensive ; and over my income. The tracleer cost nearly five thousand dollars a month. the revetio cost nearly two thousand a month. sometimes, I runs into problems trying to get my meds to prolong this
disease.I have several other meds I have to take to keep the fluid off of me and blood straight. I'm
only thirty-nine soon to be forty, but in the mist of it all the Lord Jesus is still GOOD. So I try to stay pray-up and focusbecause I know my strength comes from the Lord. I have a three year old which is a challeged for me. He got sick when he was two oldat the babysitter. He have developed delayswhich he can't do for himself. So I'm struggling with his illness and mines. Where I stay at the help is very limitative. I try my best to keep going because it is rough on a single parent, with no support or help from anyone. I learn that when you sick and downing out everyone you thought would beside you ; would disappear and disolve right in your face. I'm not current working because the doctor took me off to take care of me.

At age 39 I am a widow. My husband died of a massive stroke due to complications from a history of high blood pressure. He has a family history of strokes and high blood pressure. Salt and fatty greasy foods were not a part of his diet and had not been for years. He also took his bp medicine daily. People, you need to know that high blood pressure really is a silent killer. Now our kids and I only have memories of a great man who could not escape the clutches of this silent killer.

PLEASE STOP WORRYING ABOUT DYING, AND CONCENTRATE ON LIVING. THIS WORLD IS NOT OUR PERMANETE HOME. WE ARE ONLY HERE FOR THE TIME THAT GOD, AND HE ALONE, HAS CHOSEN FOR US TO BE HERE. THIS IS VERY EVIDENT BY THE FACT THAT BABIES AND YOUNG PEOPLE DIE AS WELL AS OLDER PEOPLE.(AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT US THAT ARE BEING MURDERED, WHICH IS VERY PREVALENT IN BLACK COMMUNITIES) WE DO NOT CONTROL DYING BY NOT EATING CERTAIN FOODS. GOD SAID THAT WE SHOULD EAT ONLY 'CLEAN FOODS', NOT STOP EATING AT ALL. WE HAVE SOME OF OUR PEOPLE ON RECORD THAT HAS LIVED VERY LONG LIVES, AND THEY CAME ALONG DURING SLAVERY, AND THEIR DIETS CONSISTED OF MOSTLY RESIDUE FOODS THAT THE SLAVE OWNERS THREW AWAY. QUIT BUYING INTO ALL THIS BULL-BLEEP THAT WE DIE BEFORE WHITE PEOPLE BECAUSE OF THIS OR THAT. EVERYTIME YOU LOOK UP, WE'RE ALWAYS LISTED AT EITHER THE TOP OF THE LIST, OR THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST, WHICHEVER IS MORE DETRIMENTAL. TRUST IN GOD, AND QUIT ALLOWING OURSELVES TO BE DICTATED TOO. IN THE END "THE LAST SHALL FINISH FIRST". HE KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT. GOD BLESS, AMEN.
