If you eat a lot of fat and chemical filled junk food, you step into a vicious cycle. And it appears, if you are black, food advertisers see you as an easy mark for just such a proposition. From the Los Angeles Times:In a review of 22 studies published in the September issue of the American Journal of Public Health, researchers found that advertisers specifically target blacks with unhealthy food messages. In television and print, high-fat, high-calorie foods are more heavily promoted to blacks. There is nothing magical about losing weight. If you take in fewer calories than you burn off, you will lose weight. And the more fat and less nutrients you take in, the worse you'll feel and the less likely you are to feel motivated to exercise properly and take care of yourself. ...
Television shows that are popular among black audiences run a greater number of food commercials than do general-audience shows. And food ads in black-oriented magazines are dominated by low-cost, energy-dense, low-nutrition foods - think doughnuts, potato chips and Twinkies.
Talk about environmental factors! Sure, you may say in response to this article, "just push back from the table. Nobody's making anybody buy anything from Mickey D's." True. But advertising works.
There is a reason you couldn't advertise hard liquor on television for so long.
And food ads in black-oriented magazines were dominated by low-cost, energy-dense, low-nutrition foods -- think doughnuts, potato chips and Twinkies.I was gonna end with a quip about TV making us fat and sad. But if I can't even read my Essence without being bombarded by caloric temptation, what's a girl going to do??
"The results suggest that the marketing environments of African American consumers are less likely to support the development and maintenance of healthful eating and, moreover, that these environments may predispose African Americans to excess caloric consumption," the study concludes. The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

So what? Is this a real issue? Is this a conspiracy to convince Black-America to be fat? LOL. Personally, I didn't need any commercials to convince me that I like to eat, whether its fatty or not. Give me all the grease you want as it tastes good. :)

It's crazy because earlier today me and a few friends had a discussion on how Mcdonald's commercials are racist. Just look at the southern fried chicken one and I quote "remember how mom made it in the brown paper bag"

No matter. It is up to each individual to decide what they want to consume. Noone is twisting their arm or holding a gun to their head. This 'conspiracy theory' mindset has got to go.

You are absolutely right. Nobody is making you eat that stuff. You are what you eat if you eat it you are going to get fat. You need to eat to live not live to eat. Don't eat "fast food" if you can get around it because you don't know what is in it. Try to make your portions regular size. and it may be hard at first but you will get used to it and don't weight yourself for at least a month.

Honestly, is the black paranoia every going to end...yep, THE MAN is targeting you, we wanna fatten you up so we can pay you more WELFARE to not work...give me a break. If blacks spent half as much time improving themseles as they do complaining maybe they wouldn't be the target of ridicule...

Blacks make up only 12% of the population but they are in every other commercial. What's with that. We ALL know about reverse racism and bigotry on their part yet they still scream that whitey or the white devil is out to get them. What a bunch of bull. If they would spend as much time working to better themselves as they do whining about the man keeping them down, they would get some respect.

I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY SO MANY PEOPLE EAT AT FAST FOOD JOINTS ANYWAY. IF YOU WILL NOTICE AS I DO, THEY NEVER WEAR GLOVES WHEN HANDLING YOUR FOOD. THEY DEFINATELY DON'T WEAR HAIR NETS. I HAVE BROUGHT IT TOO THEIR ATTENTION SEVERAL TIMES BUT WHEN I GO BACK THE SITUATION IS STILL THE SAME. THE ONLY TIME I EAT THERE NOW IS WHEN I AM SO HUNGRY THAT I AM ABOUT TO PASS OUT. AFTER EATING THERE I FEEL GUILTY AND SICK INSIDE. I HAVE CONDITIONED MYSELF TO THINK THAT EATING AT A FAST FOOD JOINT IS LIKE PUTTING A GUN TO YOUR HEAD. THIS IS WHAT KEEPS ME AWAY.
