If you eat a lot of fat and chemical filled junk food, you step into a vicious cycle. And it appears, if you are black, food advertisers see you as an easy mark for just such a proposition. From the Los Angeles Times:In a review of 22 studies published in the September issue of the American Journal of Public Health, researchers found that advertisers specifically target blacks with unhealthy food messages. In television and print, high-fat, high-calorie foods are more heavily promoted to blacks. There is nothing magical about losing weight. If you take in fewer calories than you burn off, you will lose weight. And the more fat and less nutrients you take in, the worse you'll feel and the less likely you are to feel motivated to exercise properly and take care of yourself. ...
Television shows that are popular among black audiences run a greater number of food commercials than do general-audience shows. And food ads in black-oriented magazines are dominated by low-cost, energy-dense, low-nutrition foods - think doughnuts, potato chips and Twinkies.
Talk about environmental factors! Sure, you may say in response to this article, "just push back from the table. Nobody's making anybody buy anything from Mickey D's." True. But advertising works.
There is a reason you couldn't advertise hard liquor on television for so long.
And food ads in black-oriented magazines were dominated by low-cost, energy-dense, low-nutrition foods -- think doughnuts, potato chips and Twinkies.I was gonna end with a quip about TV making us fat and sad. But if I can't even read my Essence without being bombarded by caloric temptation, what's a girl going to do??
"The results suggest that the marketing environments of African American consumers are less likely to support the development and maintenance of healthful eating and, moreover, that these environments may predispose African Americans to excess caloric consumption," the study concludes. The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

Okay, what is all of this nonsense about we, black people, are just lazy and want to eat all day, you need to take a closer look at the drive-thru lines at the fast food restaurants because the only people I see there all day everyday are whites. I see white people eating out on holliday's due to the fact that they are too lazy to cook (and because they can't cook) and if you notice the people who eat out alot are the middle and upper class workers because they can afford it, they are not sitting at home cooking, that would actually take effort. And BTW Blacks do not need to better themselves...we are already better, if we weren't all other races wouldn't want to be just like us!

It's the same thing I say about Mary J. Blige advertising for chevy .I came up listening to Mary .....sheis just o.k. at best ,but even if she was great ,it still wouldn't make me go out and buy a chevy unless I really liked the cars. Half of the people who dig on Mary aren't old enough to afford a chevy.

Yes...fast food has definitely changed aim towards african americans in much advertising ads as of late. Honestly, there is a manner of control involved in mass commercialism that most don't understand, and it does have a significant effect on "the masses" rather we choose to accept it or not, and that's regardless of whether they are black, white, hispanic, oriental, whatever. It's more of an economic-specific driven drive in my eyes though with fast food...When's the last time you saw a lawyer, doctor or business exec eating at mckie D's? DollarMenuaires live close to the poverty end of the economic dreampool; it just so happens that that end is filled by a lot of youngsters (under 30) and minorities, and that's why we are getting hit the most with those TV suggestions to wake up with the king and so forth. Then they threw hip hop in the mix which greatly increased the success of most of these new campaigns. Who can resist a commercial that looks like a jay z video? Late night McNugget lovin??? Come on...you know who is going to like that... And we all know the power of hip hop...I still wonder how females can go crazy and love songs that greatly degrade their character taking it to a place far far away from classy. Believe me, it's the beat...the music...the rhythm that sells. You won't find a rolex salesman in the ghetto, and you won't find a licquor store every block in the hamptons. Products are sold to the most likely buyers and the not-so-rich people in America buy cheap food the most because its fast and easy and they are looking for a deal. They don't know that eating healthy can be accomplished with pretty much the same investment because they rely on the media for advice. A gold mine that keeps the golden arches shining.

FYI
The reason for the hip hop singing and the African American actors and actress in the commercials are because its a known fact that majority of people want to be "cool" and now being "black" is "cool". So I take those commercials as compliments cause we all know we like our Mamma's cooking way better than Mc Donald's. HA!

Not only are black audiences targeted for fast food, but on liquor commercials, e.g.; crown royal.

Just drive around your community. You tend to see 2-3 McD's and BK restaurants within a 10-15 mile radius in low income "black communities" than you do in middle to high income "white communities". I couldn't find not one health focused restaurant like Panera Bread, or other specialty deli with turkey and tuna as an option on the menu in the black communities. Just fast food and greasy chinese food. It's sad. These places are taking advantage of the nutrion illiterate poor and they are literally killing us. I honestly think they can do better and offer more than a loaded down salad as a healthy choice.

I think that the advertisers are the one who support black businesses more. If these advertisers will hire blacks more then so be it. Would you rather they employ whites or others. You can not have it both waYS.
i THINK WE AS BLACKS HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT WE PUT IN OUR BODIES. THEY SELL FRUIT AND YOGURT. KIDS LOVE YOGURT AND FRUIT. HOW ABOUT COOK AT HOME.
