If you eat a lot of fat and chemical filled junk food, you step into a vicious cycle. And it appears, if you are black, food advertisers see you as an easy mark for just such a proposition. From the Los Angeles Times:In a review of 22 studies published in the September issue of the American Journal of Public Health, researchers found that advertisers specifically target blacks with unhealthy food messages. In television and print, high-fat, high-calorie foods are more heavily promoted to blacks. There is nothing magical about losing weight. If you take in fewer calories than you burn off, you will lose weight. And the more fat and less nutrients you take in, the worse you'll feel and the less likely you are to feel motivated to exercise properly and take care of yourself. ...
Television shows that are popular among black audiences run a greater number of food commercials than do general-audience shows. And food ads in black-oriented magazines are dominated by low-cost, energy-dense, low-nutrition foods - think doughnuts, potato chips and Twinkies.
Talk about environmental factors! Sure, you may say in response to this article, "just push back from the table. Nobody's making anybody buy anything from Mickey D's." True. But advertising works.
There is a reason you couldn't advertise hard liquor on television for so long.
And food ads in black-oriented magazines were dominated by low-cost, energy-dense, low-nutrition foods -- think doughnuts, potato chips and Twinkies.I was gonna end with a quip about TV making us fat and sad. But if I can't even read my Essence without being bombarded by caloric temptation, what's a girl going to do??
"The results suggest that the marketing environments of African American consumers are less likely to support the development and maintenance of healthful eating and, moreover, that these environments may predispose African Americans to excess caloric consumption," the study concludes. The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

It's not just blacks or hispanics, this whole generation is set on what's easiest. There's too many families working alternate shifts, and you're too tired when you get home to cook a proper meal. And it IS cheaper to buy fast food. Go into the super market and try to buy good, wholesome foods to make that meal for 4 you're talking about with $15-20. A pound of ground beef is about $5, fresh veggies $3-5, and rice or noodles $3-5. Then you would need some bread product to round it out. Then you have to fix it which still usually falls to the woman of the house, then clean up, and whammo!! You're exhausted and the meal I just mentioned isn't really any healthier when the ground beef has antibiotics and stuff in it, the veggies have pestisides on them and are picked early and then nuked to ripen and taste like cardboard...and the bread has preservitives in it.

Now, Samantha, perhaps you can tell us why white girls are cutting and mutilating themselves; why trailer parkers are fat and like greasy food; and why you're on this board!

It says "if you are black, food advertisers see you as an easy mark" -- and ITS A LIE born from a sense of victimhood. Advertisers target EVERYONE to promote their products. Having saturated white America, they say new market share opportunities in the minority community. THAT is why you see ads featuring minorities -- and YOU SHOULD BE PROUD! It shows corporate America is unbiased and recognizes you have enough disposable income to eat at McDonalds. SHUT UP with the victim mentality.

Oh, I would need to find the article, which I had only skim read recently in a magazine, but the subliminal messages on television and computers, are no longer just primative flashes of pics and words. They are now frequency generated, which screws with your brainwaves.
I guess like the psychotronics, that we all should be concerned about. The ones that Dennis Kucinich, felt the need to try to pass (I think it is called) the "Space Preservation" bill in 2002-2003, to stop this madness. Where thoughts, feelings, moods, and behaviours can be controlled.
People need to take this more seriously.
