To be blunt, because there is no time for niceties, I am sick and tired of black leaders, secular and religious, not talking about sexual practices in the black community and not talking about how HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are ravaging the black community. Now those "speak-no-evil" types will have little choice but to break their silence, because it's official. In Washington D.C., HIV/AIDS is an epidemic.
At least 3 percent of District residents have HIV or AIDS, a total that far surpasses the 1 percent threshold that constitutes a "generalized and severe" epidemic, according to a report scheduled to be released by health officials tomorrow.
The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!
That translates into 2,984 residents per every 100,000 over the age of 12 -- or 15,120 -- according to the 2008 epidemiology report by the District's HIV/AIDS office. This is not rocket science. We know how to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS and every other STD. Practice abstinence or use condoms and dental dams if you are sexually active. This situation is inexcusable and the excessive strain this epidemic will put on our health care system is daunting:
"Our rates are higher than West Africa," said Shannon L. Hader, director of the District's HIV/AIDS Administration who once led the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's work in Zimbabwe. "They're on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya."
"We have every mode of transmission" -- men having sex with men, heterosexual and injected drug use -- "going up, all on the rise, and we have to deal with them," Hader said. Source
So urgent is the concern that the HIV/AIDS Administration took the relatively rare step of couching the city's infections in a percentage, harkening to 1992, when San Francisco, around the height of its epidemic, announced that 4 percent of its population was HIV positive. But the report also cautions that "we know that the true number of residents currently infected and living with HIV is certainly higher."
The District's report found a 22 percent increase in HIV and AIDS cases from the 12,428 reported at the end of 2006, touching every race and sex across population and neighborhoods, with an epidemic level in all but one of the eight wards. Black men, with an infection rate of nearly 7 percent, carry the weight of the disease, according to the report, which also underscores that the District's HIV and AIDS population is aging. Almost 1 in 10 residents between the ages of 40 and 49 has the virus.
[ ]
Men having sex with men has remained the disease's leading mode of transmission. Heterosexual transmission and injection drug use closely follow, the report says. Three percent of black women carry the virus, partly a result of the increase in heterosexual transmissions.
"This is very, very depressing news, especially considering HIV's profound impact on minority communities," said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Health's program on infectious diseases. "And remember: The city's numbers are just based on people who've gotten tested." Source

"Men having sex with men has remained the disease's leading mode of transmission. Heterosexual transmission and injection drug use closely follow, the report says," is not honest reporting. Of 800,000 new cases in the US in 2007 almost 85% were homosexual male, 12% Drug Users, and only 3% heterosexuals. Healthy alternate lifestyle...? Really?

I'm not one of these knuckleheads that suggests that AIDS is the result of uncontrolled sin, but I do believe that having ONE sexual partner will put a serious dent in the spread of the disease. Sleeping with more than one spreads any disease one of the partners may have. I stay within my marriage but if I were not to, I would definitely use protection or REQUIRE it of my partner. AIDS is a death sentence, and I don't want a death sentence. Think about that next time you go out and decide to catch a hot date or dates and have fun all night long! You can DIE if you don't protect yourself! THERE IS NO CURE FOR HIV OR AIDS.

The African American community continues to blatantly ignore the statistics surrounding the Aids Epidemic. I believe that spreading the disease can be minimized or even stopped by using prevention to combat the problem.
All cities and states should institute a program where I.V. drug users can receive clean needles or at least educate them on why it's important to use them each and every time.
A relationship between two people means your sharing things with one another, it's your obligation to inquire after your partner's sexual history, especially if you think monogamy isn't being practice.
Never be afraid to know the unknown, being on a need to know basis has the numbers steadily raising. Let's begin to to educate each other it's not the sole responsibility of black leaders, secular and religious factors.
This is a joint effort, when you can't depend on others for answers to your questions. Then search for your own.

This is pure propaganda.....these kind of lies have been generated for years this total yellow jacket journalism rearing it’s ugly face no doubt to keep alive the stigma that African Americans are a fatalistic people. True there is an epidemic, however Aids does not favor the black community. So what….all of sudden Caucasians, Latinos, and Asians are immune to causal sex, Aids and other transmitted diseases? These types of lies have bet set to print about African Americans decade after decade. Auto Immune Deficiency first came on the scene in 80’s and first show up in the White male Homosexual community. Now, all of sudden it’s an African American disease not just a disease that spreading through the young populous in general. Now we own the rights to this disease? Please! In the 70’s we’re all dying of Hearts Disease in the 80’s was cancer affects more African Americans than any other nationality. I just don’t believe we are susceptible to all diseases known to man. These types of stories are geared to plant hopeless, fear and despair in the minds of young African Americans. They couldn't stop us from learning to read and write, becoming business savvy and buy high-end amenities so now use the most powerful medium in the world to continue psychologically and spiritually attack the ignorant and uninformed, Mass Media! If they make can mentally convince us believe we are dying bread then what’s the use in trying? We are so stupid as some of will even support the lie, it’s always been like that. Use the weak to help spread the lie. If you are thinking I'm a conspiracy theorist forget about I'm just being honest, WAKE UP PEOPLE PLEASE!

How many times does the news or any other article have to talk about this and state practice safe sex. I do not feel I should have to be there to hand you a condom at the point of intercorse or however you are pleasuring yourself. Man or woman, if you do not know how to protect yourself by now.... Then yes, the rates will continue to rise... It ain't rocket science equation or even simple addition. We like everybody out there know, hear, and see the stated methods of prevention of infection. Use it or lose!!!
