To be blunt, because there is no time for niceties, I am sick and tired of black leaders, secular and religious, not talking about sexual practices in the black community and not talking about how HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are ravaging the black community. Now those "speak-no-evil" types will have little choice but to break their silence, because it's official. In Washington D.C., HIV/AIDS is an epidemic.
At least 3 percent of District residents have HIV or AIDS, a total that far surpasses the 1 percent threshold that constitutes a "generalized and severe" epidemic, according to a report scheduled to be released by health officials tomorrow.
The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!
That translates into 2,984 residents per every 100,000 over the age of 12 -- or 15,120 -- according to the 2008 epidemiology report by the District's HIV/AIDS office. This is not rocket science. We know how to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS and every other STD. Practice abstinence or use condoms and dental dams if you are sexually active. This situation is inexcusable and the excessive strain this epidemic will put on our health care system is daunting:
"Our rates are higher than West Africa," said Shannon L. Hader, director of the District's HIV/AIDS Administration who once led the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's work in Zimbabwe. "They're on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya."
"We have every mode of transmission" -- men having sex with men, heterosexual and injected drug use -- "going up, all on the rise, and we have to deal with them," Hader said. Source
So urgent is the concern that the HIV/AIDS Administration took the relatively rare step of couching the city's infections in a percentage, harkening to 1992, when San Francisco, around the height of its epidemic, announced that 4 percent of its population was HIV positive. But the report also cautions that "we know that the true number of residents currently infected and living with HIV is certainly higher."
The District's report found a 22 percent increase in HIV and AIDS cases from the 12,428 reported at the end of 2006, touching every race and sex across population and neighborhoods, with an epidemic level in all but one of the eight wards. Black men, with an infection rate of nearly 7 percent, carry the weight of the disease, according to the report, which also underscores that the District's HIV and AIDS population is aging. Almost 1 in 10 residents between the ages of 40 and 49 has the virus.
[ ]
Men having sex with men has remained the disease's leading mode of transmission. Heterosexual transmission and injection drug use closely follow, the report says. Three percent of black women carry the virus, partly a result of the increase in heterosexual transmissions.
"This is very, very depressing news, especially considering HIV's profound impact on minority communities," said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Health's program on infectious diseases. "And remember: The city's numbers are just based on people who've gotten tested." Source

Is it really known why AIDS infection is so much more widespread in black communities? It can't simply be because people are having sex. Most people in every human group have sex, and a certain per centage of them have pre-or extramarital sex. A certain number of people in all human groups practice homosexual acts too, but I hear that viral infections of WHITE gays have DECLINED.
So, what's the cause of the large scale of infections in our community? Is it our lack of education? Lack of decent readily available health care? What is it?

TO NANM AND ALL OTHERS INTERESTED!!!
I first learned about COLLOIDAL SILVER on a MS forum. I had noticed the term being used and one person using the term included her email address and phone number. "I was desperate and devestated, I had NO ONE to turn to for comfort, not even my wife, who blamed ME for the disease, I was totally alone emotionally, mentally, I was a complete wreck" so when I saw her number I decided to call her, I figured nothing from nothing leaves nothing...... So I called her, she answered, we spoke on the phone that night for over an hour. She had told me how she herself had learned about the colloidal silver and how when she first started taking it back around 1998, she was almost bed ridden, "this was 2004 when we spoke on the phone", and at the time of our conversation, she was about 98% back to normal. Well, I decided to try it in January of 2005. At that point I was taking daily injections of this stuff called copaxone, it did NOTHING for me, I called it my daily bee sting, because injecting it felt just like a hornet sting, also all the pills didnt work for me either. I have volumes of research on the colloidal silve that I myself did, so after my research I decided to try it. I took the colloidal silver for a year, first starting out with a tea spoon three times a day and over time I worked up to sixteen onces three times a day and like her, I learnd how to make it myself. When my yearly MRI was taken, every one, my doctors, the nurses, "my wife", even myself were surprised to see that "ALL" the lesions wer completely gone.... not a single one was left... Since then I try my best to educate people, to try and let every one know that there is hope and a way. So please, PLEEEEEEASE,stop bashing each other over whats wrong and start to work on whats right. With us dogging one and other just widens the rift, knowledge is power, knowledge and power will save your and your loved ones life. Don't do to others what my wife did to me due to ignorance, as a people we need to learn to HELP one and other, not drag him or her through the mud. Well any way, that's how I learned about COLLOIDAL SILVER and that's what it did for me.

EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AIDS/HIV. PEOPLE WAKE UP ITS STILL OUT THERE COVER UP OR YOU WILL GET IT. PARENTS TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT SEX,DRUGS AND THE FACTS OF LIFE. THERE ARE TO MANY YOUNG GIRLS OUT HERE WITH BABIES,AND THE FATHERS ARE NOT TAKING CARE OF THEM WE ARE THE TAX PAYERS.START TEACHNG SEX EDUCATION IN THE SECOND OR THIRD GRADE.THESE KIDS ARE HAVING SEX VERY EARLY AND THEM ON DRUGS OR DRINKING. AND IT DON'T ALL THE BLACKS EITHER. SO WAKE UP PEOPLE START TALKING TO YOUR CHILDREN AND OTHER PEOPLE CHILDREN IF YOU HAVE TO. BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO ON DRUGS WON'T TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN. IF THEY KNOW WHERE THEY ARE.

please people beware of government propaganda...you can create a statistic out of thin air. These lies have always been spread about blacks. I certainly believe the Aids epidemic has spread to our community but its highly unlikely as they claim. These kinds of news report are created to generate fear and hopeless and despair in the black community do not believe everything in print. Do your own research. This disease was reported to have been primarily spread in through the white male homosexual community now belongs to the entire black community....what is the crap.....white people and other races are suddenly immune to sex and transmitted diseases. Wake up people.....don't believe the LIES......!!!!

This is pure propaganda.....these kind of lies have been generated for years this total yellow jacket journalism rearing it’s ugly face no doubt to keep alive the stigma that African Americans are a fatalistic people. True there is an epidemic, however Aids does not favor the black community. So what….all of sudden Caucasians, Latinos, and Asians are immune to causal sex, Aids and other transmitted diseases? These types of lies have been set to print about African Americans decade after decade. Auto Immune Deficiency first came on the scene in 80’s and first showed up in the white male Homosexual community. Now, all of sudden it’s an African American disease not just a disease that spreading through the young populous in general. Now we own the rights to this disease? Please! In the 70’s we’re all dying of Hearts Disease in the 80’s was cancer affects more African Americans than any other nationality. I just don’t believe we are susceptible to all diseases known to man; maybe the mortality rate is a little higher in these communities because of lower social status, education, and economical differences. These types of stories are geared to plant hopeless, fear and despair in the minds of young African Americans. They couldn't stop us from learning to read and write, becoming business savvy and buy high-end amenities so now use the most powerful medium in the world to continue psychologically and spiritually to attack the ignorant and uninformed by using Mass Media! If they can mentally convince us to believe we are dying bread then what’s the use in trying? Some of us are so naive we’ll even support the lie; it’s always been like that. They use the weak to help spread the lie. If you are thinking I'm a conspiracy theorist forget about it, I'm just being honest, WAKE UP PEOPLE

Reading the statistics in this article and the linked article from the Washington Post are absolutely startling. I'm at a loss for words because proposing solutions seems overwhelming. This needs to be a full on campaign in every nook and cranny of the black community within DC. A day should not go by without hearing about the dangers of having unprotected sex and HIV/AIDS prevention. With National HIV Testing Day coming up on June 27, perhaps we can all pledge to at least take an HIV test.

This may seem a bit off topic, but using protection will also cut down on the extremely high teenage and out-of-wedlock pregnancy epidemic in the black community as well. Be safe people! 10 minutes of pleasure is not worth risking the rest of your life!
