African Americans and Hispanics are at a higher risk for developing Alzheimer's disease, but most shocking is the fact that blacks are more likely than any other race to develop the degenerative disease, according to a new study released by the Alzheimer's Association.
Older African Americans are nearly twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's than whites, and Hispanics are about 1.5 times more likely than whites to develop the disease, results show.
While it is unclear why the disease takes such a devastating toll on minorities, the report says conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes-both of which are known risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and dementia-are more common in older blacks and Hispanics than in whites and probably contribute to the prevalence among the groups.
"Likewise, lower levels of education and other socio-economic characteristics that are associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are more common in older African Americans and Hispanics than in older whites,'' the report says.
Further, minorities are unlikely to know they have the disease and fail to receive early treatment. Medication can be more helpful during the early phases of Alzheimer's and dementia when patients are more capable of making decisions and plans, according to a CNN news report.
In some cases, treatment isn't sought because family members choose to ignore symptoms out of respect, the article says. In low-income households, some families can't help but to ignore signs because they cannot afford to pay for around-the-clock care, unlike most middle-to-upper-class families that have health care beyond Medicaid. An estimated 11 million Americans provide 12.5 billion hours of unpaid care for loved ones.
The key for minorities is early intervention, which requires access health care for treatment of the disease. Below, the Alzheimer's Association lists 10 signs of the disease:
1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work or at leisure
4. Confusion with time or place
5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
8. Decreased or poor judgment
9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
10. Changes in mood or personality

Whites are the ones who take a pill for everything. You guys are the biggest pill-heads in the country. Especially anti-depression drugs. The drug company's are very wealthy off you whites.

I must say about 30 yrs ago Blacks didn't go to Doctors or got the medical treatment that were needed, That's why so many died young and unexpected, But i know of many old Whites that didn't remember what day or year it were, or who their own family members were? AS I STATED BEFORE i been in Health care for 20 plus years, Maybe due to the fact that there's so few people of color in these places MAYBE I MISSED SOMETHING? My Grandparents died in their late 80's and still knew everyone, You can't do a study on what's not there?

This story is BS! Every study that comes out makes Blacks more susceptible to get everything.
All of this is just what they do to keep Blacks depressed and oppressed. It is BS. Trust me.

You know, this dreadful information is something to ponder!!! I do believe Diet/Foods we do not eat plays a higher Part in this Alz;, Vegetables, lack of exposure of important information, reading, exercise on a daily basis... Drinking Tea excellent for brain activity, lack of game playing, lack of a Black Man To Marry, since 78% of them is in Jail;(Who are Drop-Outs of School at the early age of 14.... No one to guide them; keep them going in the correct/right Direction. Leaving 44% of Black women who will never marry, that connection to marriage and babies, and enjoying parent hood is the greater cause of this tragic Alz..., You pick or they pick a so called Study Analysis on the Color of People. The entire system is set up by the White race to deny Blacks their chance, as early as 8 years old. They set the tone and the temperature to add to the this horrible state.... Clear Up the Above listing; and the Colored People would not go into their retirement years, really not knowing.

Your post perfectly illustrates how blacks are in denial. The reality is that blacks are poorer, less intelligent, have higher rates of STD's and AIDS, higher incarceration rates, commit more crimes, etc.
But, you don't want to hear reality, and won't accept it when you do. You either say you don't believe the facts or that the messenger of the facts is making it up as they are "racist". You'd rather get your truth from the movies and the media and the BS Black History Month fiction, where blacks are made into mythical heroes.
