A federal advisory board recently met to determine what to do about the sale of menthol cigarettes, which are heavily marketed to blacks who have the highest rates of smoking-related diseases.
The advisory board of the Food and Drug Administration began meeting on Tuesday in Washington to weigh the health risks of "menthol flavorings in cigarettes, which account for almost a third of the nation's $70 billion cigarette market,'' according to an article in The New York Times. Some health advocates have called for an outright ban of the product, whose allure is that it hides the taste of cigarettes.
The issue is important to the African American community because menthol brands have long been favored by 75 percent of black smokers, the article says. And African Americans who smoke menthol cigarettes may be less likely to quit than those who smoke regular cigarettes, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey-School (UMDNJ) of Public Health, which was published by The Medical News.
"Historically, tobacco companies have targeted minority populations when marketing menthol cigarettes,'' Cristine Delnevo, Ph.D., director of the Center for Tobacco Surveillance and Evaluation Research at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health, said in an interview for The Medical News. "Although whites and non-whites have similar smoking prevalence rates, the fact that non-whites are more likely to smoke menthols, and those who smoke menthols are less likely to quit, could explain why minority populations continue to suffer disproportionately from tobacco-caused disease and death.''
But representatives from three major cigarette companies testified before the panel last week that menthol does not make cigarettes more harmful. The F.D.A.'s advisory board is still debating the matter. Stay tuned.

MENTHOL OR NON-MENTHOL,BLACK,WHITE HISPANIC-AS LONG AS YOU'RE OVER THE AGE OF 21,YOU CAN CHOOSE TO SMOKE OR NOT TO SMOKE. I'M A SMOKER AND IT'S MY CHOICE AND MY RIGHT. I DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL,BUT I DON'T TELL THOSE WHO DO,NOT TO. ANYWAY,WHEN'S THE LAST TIME YOU HEARD SOMEONE BEING KILLED BY A SMOKER DRIVING. IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING THAT'S A REAL DANGER,TALK ABOUT THE MANY DRUNK DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. DRUNK DRIVERS,ALCOHLICS CAUSE HEALTH RISKS TO THEMSELVES AS WELL AS OTHERS.
SMOKE 'EM,IF YOU GOT 'EM.

Wow, I hear you'll. I feel sorry for smokers though. It's a tough habit to beat. Back in the day I use to start or stop at will. Then I couldn't stop. It took me two years to quit and I'm glad that I did. It really harms your body. I use to smoke Newports too. Well I'm glad I stopped. It will be 9 years, this month and I'm glad I conquered it and stop wasting my money on them.

I am now in my 7th week of not smoking. Patches and gum did nothing for me, seemed like they made me crave more nicotine, I even tried the electronic cigarette, actually not such a bad alternative. But I wanted to stop so I also quit cold turkey like "Roger" commented and I think this is the best way. I'd like to say I've quit forever but I've quit before and went back. However, this time I was just tired of smoking so I feel like I may be able to stop for good. I don't miss the coughing waking me up while I slept, the tightness in my chest, the smell in my car and on my clothes, the expense,(in NYC they are $9 a pack)I always smoked menthols because they taste better and I agree this may be what makes them so hard to give up. Banning them might not be such a bad thing but quitting has to be a personal choice you cannot force people to quit. If a smoker wants to smoke menthols, just like any other addict, they will find a way to add the menthol flavor.

For all of you who have discontinuing smoking congratulations--you are improving your health and saving lots of $$$$$ too. For all of you who continue to smoke--you are worsening your health and those who are around you when you smoke, and you are spending lots of $$$$ too. You may argue--as long as I can pay for the habit and I am over 21, then it is no ones business. Well, I hope you have healthcare benefits that will take care of you if you happen to get lung disease. I feel sorry for your children who have to inhale the second hand smoke--it could be that you allow your teens to join in too.
For those who smoke, you should consider buying stock in the tobacco companies. But, you might not know how to go about doing that. It is worth looking in to because you can make a killing!!! No pun intended.
I wonder why the street names and slang terms for cigarettes are: coffin nails, cancer sticks? Something to think about though

I do believe that menthol is harder on your lungs which in this article the adiction factor is the only thing mentioned. I was always told that menthol smoke would slowly cristalize your lungs. Is this just an old wives tale or is there something to it
