Nick Cannon & Pepsi Unite to Fight Hunger

Community service is not a foreign concept to 'America's Got Talent' host Nick Cannon. As founder of the organization HALO (Helping and Leading Others) and an avid participant of the youth organization 'Do Something,' the TV mogul takes pride in being able to give back to the community.

This year, Cannon, along with 100 PepsiCo employees, came together in New York City to help the nonprofit organization City Harvest in the fight against hunger. Volunteers worked together to pack 40,000 pounds of fresh apples into bags, which were then delivered to emergency feeding programs throughout the metro area. The day of service helped more than 2 million people in New York City struggling with hunger.

Black Voices had the opportunity to catch up with Mariah Carey's hubby to talk about giving back, his upcoming projects and the fate of his hit show 'Wild 'n Out.'

How long have you been involved with City Harvest?

I've been involved with City Harvest -- the world's first food rescue organization -- for the past two years. It's a great organization that I enjoy working with.

Does this cause hit close to home?

I guess you could say that. I come from a poverty-stricken background. When I was growing up, we were recipients of government assistance, but I didn't consider it a hand out. I like to think of it as a hand up. I'm not ashamed of where I came from and I'm happy that I'm fortunate enough to give back now.

What other charities and nonprofits are you involved with?

I'm a big participant in the youth organization Do Something, as well as my own organization that I recently started, called HALO (Helping and Leading Others), where I shine light on young people who are doing things in their community -- big or small.

When you get involved with nonprofit organizations and charities, what do you look for?

I love getting involved with charities, but I really try to work more with organizations that showcase instant gratification. I like to be able to see where everything is going and who I'm helping. Take City Harvest, for example, this food is going directly to people in need. We're sorting this food out, and it's going to then reach people this same exact day. Sometimes when you donate money to certain organizations, you don't always see where the money is going.

Do you have any projects that you're currently working on?

I have so many things I'm working on right now. I have my radio show on CBS' WXRK-FM New York [92.3 NOW] from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. every morning. The show is great, and we're having a lot of fun. I have a movie coming out soon called 'School Gyrls,' which I'm also directing. I'm involved in a lot of production projects as well and getting ready to host the next season of 'America's Got Talent.'

Is 'Wild 'n Out' coming back anytime soon?

'Wild 'n Out' is definitely coming back. I'm currently working out the format as we speak. I'm going to "Russel Simmons" it this time around though, so I won't be hosting it anymore. Right now we're in search of finding a new host for the show, but it's definitely coming back.
