The creator, Angela de Joseph, who worked for years at Johnson Products and as associate beauty editor at Essence Magazine, created Naturalaxer Kit-In-A-Jar, the first multi-ethnic hair relaxer out of a growing concern over the harsh and toxic chemicals African-American women use to straighten their hair, she told AOL Wellness. She also is a founding editor of 'Sophisticate's Black Hair Styling and Care Guide,' and uses the products on her long, luxurious tresses. The product -- which de Joseph developed 15 years ago -- hit the online market this summer.
The Green-Wonders line is available at Natural Hair Care Oasis. It is comprised of 30 products. The straightener costs $29.99 and users can receive a $10 discount if they join a club for auto-shipping for six-week touch-ups.
"The skin absorbs hair topically via the scalp, which then enters the blood stream,'' said de Joseph, who grew up at the knee of her mother who owned a salon and beauty school in Trinidad. "The scalp is very sensitive and because of its proximity to the brain, it is important to avoid putting harsh chemicals in your hair.''

"They have a variety of natural ingredients, no sodium laureth sulfate or parabens,'' said de Joseph. "I developed the line so we could have quality hair products so we could make our hair healthier. Without the toxins and the chemicals, it allows us to alter our hair texture without breaking the bonds inside the hair or damaging the scalp. It softens and loosens the natural hair texture and allows you to still wear your hair in natural styles as well as curly, wavy or straight. You have more versatility with styling your hair."
Houston Resident Joyce Wright, who is a member of the popular 1960s and 1970s American vocal group '5th Dimension', was sold on the product as soon as she tried it six weeks ago. After growing out a perm for four years, Wright was finally ready for a change. She discovered de Joseph's Green Wonders during a conversation with her friend and decided to give it try.
"It made my hair soft and manageable,'' said Wright. "I can comb through it and not experience any breakage. When I put it in, I don't experience a burning sensation or irritation. Even the odor is pleasant. There was no strong chemical smell. I'm going to put it in my son's hair. He's got his little look going and I think this will add to it.''

Why black people have to sell their inventions/products at an expensive price.. no wonder people are going to the other perm companies..its reasonable... I wouldn't dare spend 29.99 on some hair stuff...I am looking at these prices and I am like oh my lawd! Yes I am reasonable.. its a reccession.. okay...I don't mind supporting black businesses...but we need to cut down on the price..thats why we are going to white businessess...because we can afford it!

I don't mind the higher prices if it's for a product that works. I use a creme now that's $32 for 8 oz. I look at my hair as an investment and a compliment to everything else that I have on. Recession or not, I'm not going to go with secondrate products that may or may not work as well on my hair. Whether it's black owned or not will only factor into my purchasing decision if everything else is equal. Quality is paramount, regardless of who makes it.

@ carefree
I visited the website and was disappointed to see their products lacked disclosure of the ingredients. We as a consumer need to know if their products are SAFE to use on our hair by having information of the ingredients easily available for us to read.
Considering the fact that alot of hair care products contains ingredients that causes CANCER. If they're going to promote and advertised Long and Thicker hair in a short period of time, it's only FAIR to enlist the ingredients of every products on their website.
Also, why all the products advertised on their website are outrageously OVERPRICED? God Bless them anyway.

Since being menopausal I have decided to grow out my perm and for now I am sporting a press and curl. I really don't like a press and curl because in California stylists charge a grip for a press and curl and for me they really don't last. I would like to try a perm again but I don't want any harsh chemicals on my hair. Has anyone on this message board tried this perm and what was the results? Is it worth the high price tag?

I have been wearing natural hair for a year now. I find it is a weight off my shoulders. I can now stand out in the rain without having to worry about my hair getting messy. When I want my hair straight, I straighten it with a hot curling iron or I will sport a nice straight wig. My hair is thicker, much longer and healthier since I have been natural. In the City of Philadelphia I have noticed other Black women are going natural. But thanks for the offer on the "All Natural Perm" There is no such thing.

Congratulations Angela!!! Bravo and Hooray to you for developing a product for Black Women - and thanks for being a blackwoman who happens to be concerned and actually care about our hair and well being.
It is a shame that we as Black folks will spend a ton of money on designer clothes from people who can't stand us and will never give back to our community. And yet in still we will spend hundreds and I have heard thousands of dollars to get a weave of another ethnic groups hair- yet we say that $29.99 is too much for a perm that is not harsh on our delicate hair. I sometimes laugh at the stupidity of my ethnic group. As you may have discerned, I don't say race because - THERE IS ONLY ONE RACE- " THE HUMAN RACE" There is a number of people groups or ethnicities/cultures- but not races.
So tell me black folks- why not give Angela's product a try?? If she was Chinese, Indian, Iranian, caucasian or any other people group you would buy it and not bat an eye at doing so.
Here this woman has spent years researching and formulating a product that she can relate too - because she worked in the industry as well as being a black female who is simply trying to offer a better, healthier and ecological product line to her ethnic group. SEEM TO ME LIKE SHE ACTUALLY CARES. I trust her motives more than another ethnic group.
Come on black folks- wake up!! start connecting the dots and realize that no one is going to take care of us - but us. Every other ethnic groups does what is best to benefit their culture- except us. The chinese, italians etc. have their own communities and product lines and there are times that they loan money to their own people for business ventures etc without requiring them to pay interest on that loan- so that they can get ahead.( Isn't that awesome)!!
But on the other hand, After they get finish selling junk, spoiled items and rendering crappy services to us ( while talking about you in their native languages) they go back to their own neighborhoods and help their own people group get ahead in an effort to boost their families and their communities as a whole.
And just so you know, The main reason why black business have to charge more for products- is because they are often kept out of or not privvy to business consortiums , associations or group deals. Unfortunately, they don't have any type of hook ups to receive discounts in order to offer or pass along savings to their customers. So they generally have to charge more in order to recoup their investment and make a profit/ living. But other ethnic groups have certain hook-ups and do not allow black business to get in. Which locks them out of things and eventually they are forced to sell their businesses at a low price to those other ethnic groups which is designed by them as an M.O. to help foster the failure of black businesses and ultimately keep black folks depended on them. They believe that they have the natural born right to own businesses (but not you) and this is the kicker , after they force us to sell to them - they then turn around and sell those items back to you at what price they want and treat you like you are scum. JUST THINK - IF BLACKS BUSINESSES SOLD TO BLACK FOLKS ESPECIALLY IN THE HAIR CARE MARKET- OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE IN BUSINESS. We are furnishing their children's education and better lifesyles on our hair & nails... while our kids drop out.. IS that Not Stupid???
And guess what? They could careless if you burn a hole in your scalp. ( but of course if you do burn a hole in your scalp- they will be there to sell you their hair via wig, or hair piece for that weave ). So you see anyway you move - they are there to service you, get your money - and laugh all the way to the bank and then go to their china town etc and help pull up their relatives while the black ethnic group- pull down their relatives, community and other black businesses. Now I know why we love CRABS... We think just like them... PULL THEM DOWN, PULL THEM DOWN -WAY DOWN-WAY DOWN... Is that the Black folks RAH, RAH, RAH???? I wonder.. God help us please!!! Oh God please help us to THINK and LOOK OUT for our own BENEFIT... FOR ONCE...
