Yesterday afternoon at the 8th annual Lupus Bag Ladies Luncheon in Los Angeles, Grammy Award-winning singer Toni Braxton delivered a startling revelation to a room full of about 600 women and celebrities: In addition to her heart condition, she has lupus, the autoimmune disease effecting more than 1.5 million Americans. Attendees, who thought the 43-year-old Braxton was only there to receive the Humanitarian Award given by the organization, were stunned when she said: "Take a look, this is what lupus looks like." The disease, which causes the body's immune system to attack healthy cells and tissue, is potentially deadly.
Braxton, who has attended the fundraiser several times over the years, took to her Twitter account (@ToniBraxton) to express her thoughts on the revelation: "Had a great time. ... A big moment for me. It was a tough decision to come out about it. But it was such a relief!" This isn't the first health condition the star suffers from. Most recently, it was reported that she had a benign tumor removed from her breast shortly after her run on 'Dancing With the Stars.' And in 2008, she was diagnosed with pericarditis, an inflammation of the heart lining that has left her prone to high blood pressure and heart palpitations. That finding forced her to cancel her show in Las Vegas and several tour dates.
Most recently Braxton made headlines when she filed for bankruptcy, for the second time, citing her inability to pay bills in excess of $50 million.

With all those stresses in her life, I can see why she would go on a shopping spree.

No, Toni Braxton I am not giving you my hard earned money to get you out of debt. No matter how many stars you bring out or variety acts you have. Instead of shopping sprees how about going to the doctor? Lupus is NOT cancer. You can treat your symptoms and if you take care of yourself, you can live. Bet that girl from the Lion King wished she had Braxton's money. But she's dead now, from cancer not lupus.

Robert, you are a nasty person. What do you know about Lupus? It may not be cancer but the 2 run neck to neck. I have had Lupus since 1986 and can tell you first hand how it has taken over and distroyed my once healthy and active life. Lupus makes you feel as though you have an extreamly bad case of the flue all the time - sick as a dog and so weak you can't walk. Then comes liver failure and kidney failure and if you are lucky, you get a transplant. It also affects your heart and every other organ in your body. It's a horrid thing to have. Many times, I have prayed that God would just take me from this earth and end my suffering but because of all the health issues Lupus has caused me, I have been able to help other people understand what Lupus is all about because most doctors will NOT explain what Lupus is and it's effects. So, unless you are stricken with it - don't make judgments, men get it too.
God bless all those who do have Lupus - just stay positive :)

Hey Robert-try reading the article. At NO point does it say cancer and lupus are the same. It says that she was treated for breast cancer and that lupus is an autoimmune disease. Having had an aunt who had cardiac problems and who died from lupus, I am pretty conversant with the disease-as you apparently are not. You certainly are a nasty ignorant person

How insensitive! It is obvious that you are not well informed about Lupus or Cancer, otherwise you would not have made such an ignorant STATEMENT. It is obvious, even to a blind man that she has gone to the doctor,Remember she was told by the doctor that she has the disease! I am sure the $5.00 you would donate would not help her cause.
I hope you nor a love one is ever stricken with any illness.

Robert, Lupus is related to many forms of cancer. When inflammation has been going on for a while those tissues are much more likely to become malignant. The lupus sufferer has to endure years of severe disability before a diagnosis of cancer-and then it gets worse. Not all lupus patients can tolerate medications that are effective for some, and there is no cure. Think about it-if you are allergic to something, the first thing your doctor will tell you is to stay away from what you are allergic to. But if you are allergic to your own body, there is no escape and the reactions just keep escalating as the immune system attempts to fight off the unseen foe. I haven't even touched on the subject of pain but this can be the most painful condition anyone ever has to endure. Body tissues, inside and out, are raw and sometimes bleeding. Educate yourself about this horrible disease.
